English craftsmanship · Vancouver Island

English craftsmanship. Vancouver Island gardens.

Decks, pergolas, custom fences, garden structures, retaining walls. Built the old-country way — tighter joints, better cuts, materials that last. Run by a Yorkshire-trained carpenter on Vancouver Island for two decades.

What we do

Outdoor structures, built the old-country way.

We're not a five-truck operation. We're a small Yorkshire-rooted crew that takes one or two projects at a time and finishes them properly.

Cedar & composite decks

Western red cedar first. Composites where it makes sense. Hidden fasteners, mitred corners, picture-frame edges.

Pergolas & arbours

Cedar pergolas with proper mortise-and-tenon joinery. Built in the shop, raised on-site in a day.

Cedar fences & gates

Privacy panels, picket, lattice, custom gates. Posts set in concrete with proper drainage at the base — they don't rot out at year 5.

Garden structures

Greenhouses, garden sheds, raised vegetable boxes, trellises. All cedar, built to last 20+ years on the coast.

Stone & timber retaining walls

Dry-laid natural stone, timber tie, engineered Allan Block. Designed for West Coast slopes and rainfall.

Repairs & restoration

Got an old cedar deck that needs life put back in it? We rebuild what's salvageable and replace what isn't.

Yorks.

Born in Yorkshire. Built here for twenty years.

I came up in the carpentry trade in West Yorkshire — where everything was built to last a couple of hundred years. Brought that habit to Vancouver Island in the early 2000s and never looked back. The Yorkshire Rose is on the truck because the work has the same standards.

  • Real joinery, not just nails & screws

Mortise-and-tenon, lap joints, hidden fasteners. Costs a bit more in labour, lasts decades longer.

  • Cedar first, every time

We use Vancouver Island cedar wherever it makes sense — locally milled, sustainably cut, suited to the climate.

  • We don’t take on what we can’t finish

One or two projects at a time. We finish, then we start the next one.

  • 20+ years of references on the Island

We’ll give you the numbers of three customers from 10+ years ago. The work is still standing — that's the real review.

Real reviews

Real Vancouver Island reviews.

Twenty years of word-of-mouth on the Island.

★★★★★

"Best deck on the street, hands down. Mitred picture-frame edges, hidden fasteners, the works. Three years in, still looks like the day it was finished."

Karen B. — Hammond Bay, Nanaimo
★★★★★

"Cedar pergola with mortise joinery — you can’t even see a screw. Yorkshire built this with the same standards you’d see in an English garden. Worth every penny."

Geoff T. — Parksville
★★★★★

"Replaced our 30-year-old fence and rebuilt the garden arbour. Quality is in another league vs. the cheap quotes we got. Will hire them again."

Sue & Don L. — Lantzville
Honest answers

Frequently asked.

Do you use composite or only cedar?
Cedar first, always. We use composite for ground-level decks and high-traffic stairs where it makes sense — we'll tell you when.
What’s your warranty?
Five years of workmanship in writing. Cedar deck boards typically last 20+ years on the Island if maintained.
How long is the wait?
Usually 6–12 weeks out from sign-off, depending on the season. Spring books up fast.
Do you do small jobs?
Yes — a single garden arbour, a small fence repair, a new gate. We’d rather do small jobs well than turn anyone away.
Are you insured?
WCB BC and $5M liability. Certificates available before we start.
